Understanding Cracked Teeth and Endodontics
Cracked teeth are a common dental issue that can lead to pain, sensitivity, and more serious problems if left untreated. Endodontists are specially trained to diagnose and treat cracks, helping to save your natural tooth whenever possible.

What Causes Cracked Teeth?
Cracks in teeth can result from:
-
Biting down on hard foods or objects.
-
Trauma to the face or mouth.
-
Teeth grinding (bruxism), especially at night.
-
Large fillings that weaken the tooth structure.
-
Sudden temperature changes (like eating hot food and immediately drinking something cold).
How do cracked teeth affect your tooth's health?

A crack can allow bacteria to enter the inner layers of the tooth, potentially causing infection or inflammation in the pulp (the soft tissue inside the tooth). This can result in pain, sensitivity to temperature, or discomfort when chewing. It is important to note that even if a fracture doesn’t appear on an x-ray, there’s still a chance that a crack exists.
What's the prognosis for root canal treatment on a cracked tooth?

Good Prognosis

-
Cracks Above the Gumline:
If the crack is confined to the crown (the visible part of the tooth above the gumline), root canal treatment followed by a crown can often save the tooth and provide a long-term solution. -
Early Detection:
When cracks are diagnosed and treated early, before extensive damage or infection has occurred, the chances of success are much higher.
Poor Prognosis

-
Cracks Extending Below the Gumline:
If the crack extends into the root or below the gumline, it becomes more difficult to save the tooth. These cracks can compromise the structural integrity of the tooth and lead to failure even after treatment. -
Vertical Root Fractures:
Teeth with vertical root fractures (cracks that run along the length of the root) generally cannot be saved. Extraction is often the recommended treatment in such cases. -
Delayed Treatment:
If a cracked tooth is left untreated, the crack can worsen, leading to significant infection, bone loss, or abscess formation, all of which reduce the success rate of root canal treatment.
Endodontist's Role

Endodontists are trained to assess the severity of cracked teeth using advanced diagnostic tools like CBCT scans or microscopes. Based on the findings, they can determine whether the tooth is salvageable and recommend the best course of action.
